If the walls of our house could speak, what would they tell us?
Of Mozart, who lived next door and preferred to enter the hotel through the back entrance? Or Anton Bruckner, who often shut himself away in one of the hotel rooms for days on end to refine his symphonies? Of the parties? Of the regular guests? The König von Ungarn is one of the oldest hotels in the city. However, the history of the building at Schulerstraße 10 begins centuries earlier—more precisely, in the late Middle Ages. At that time, it served as lodging for the clergy of the neighboring St. Stephen’s Cathedral. It later gave rise to the inn “Zur Weißen Rose.” During the Austro-Hungarian Empire, it became a grand hotel where primarily Hungarian nobles and magnates stayed, some of them for years on end. Hence the name: König von Ungarn.

Here, we tell the story of how a hostel became one of Vienna’s oldest hotels and the people who have shaped the establishment over the centuries.
For 262 years, the house at Schulerstraße 10 has stood there almost unchanged. Almost, because a lot has happened since then—not only in the world, but right here as well.
Anyone walking through the house today moves through rooms that are centuries old and yet are naturally part of the present. Over the years, the König von Ungarn has been renovated with great care. Historic details have been preserved, and new elements blend in without drawing undue attention to themselves. Rooms and public spaces have been redesigned and, here and there, updated with modern comforts.

But you’ll also encounter the many people in between: regulars and travelers passing through, clergy and adventurers, well-traveled guests and neighbors. Together, they tell the story of a house that has been welcoming guests for centuries.
This guest book is a historical document, spanning from the Habsburg era to the present day, preserved unchanged and in its entirety. It contains entries from the period of National Socialism featuring symbols and beliefs that we condemn in the strongest possible terms. Preserving history also means confronting it. In doing so, we hope to make our contribution against forgetting.
